We've escaped to the wilderness & we're building our home at a cabin in the woods. Now that we are dealing with the extreme cold temperatures of a Canadian winter we have moved our renovations to the indoors. This week we are tackling the 1 project absolutely EVERYBODY told us NOT to DIY: DRYWALL!! Wish us luck... I think we're gonna need it.
Catch up on our cabin in the woods videos: bit.ly/3mNAcpX
Who are we?
We're Eamon and Bec, a Canadian couple who previously lived and traveled full-time in our self converted Sprinter Van!! When the pandemic hit in 2020 we made the difficult decision to abandon our van in Africa and fly home to Canada. Now we're here... living at a cabin in the Canadian wilderness. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!!
Our goal here is to inspire you to chase after your own dreams! We hope to create a community of like-minded, positive individuals who will grow to love and support one another on their own journeys.

  • Guess who's back? BACK AGAIN! Reroot's back. Tell a friend! Season 2 of our podcast launched this morning and we would be so grateful if you'd give it a download, a listen and a review. Sandra WatkinsSandra WatkinsMonth ago
  • Drywall is so easy. I don't know, why so many people were telling you not to do it. It gets easier when you cut on the white side and break it. Then, you just have to cut the brown paper side of the plasterboard and job done. When I fix plasterboards to the studs I mark the centre of the stud (on the floor and ceiling) and use chalk line to mark where the screws have to go. For fine tuning use a block of wood. You can "shave" the plasterboard this way. It's messy, but for small adjustments it's much better than cutting it with a knife.

  • Eamon, didn't anyone teach you how to negotiate the trailer alone? The following is how I used to do my boat trailer by myself. 1. Find or cut yourself a stump 8"-10" diameter by about 2" taller than the height of the hitch on your truck. 2. Place the stump next to and close to the end of the trailer tongue 3. Lift the tongue of the trailer onto the stump, 4. Back the truck up just under the tongue, 5, Remove the stump, lowering the trailer tongue onto the hitch ball 6. Make necessary connections and drive away. ONWARRRRD!

  • You didn’t need a protractor 😂 as long as you have one angle (the 90 degree one here) and the length of two sides you’re good (because the other angle just depend on the length of the sides). So Eamon probably just figured out the length of one of the sides wrong 😬😬 anyways haha just wanted to do my nerd here, sending lots of love from Belgium !!

  • Don’t hesitate to get back issues checked out...seriously. I “threw out my back” and was in bed for 3 days then went back to life as normal. Apparently I had several bulging discs and like 6 weeks later I bent over to change our youngest’s diaper, no big deal, and fell to the floor screaming. I was right next to the couch and it took 3 hours to get onto the couch. Couldn’t get up for literally anything, for over 36 hours. We should have called an ambulance but didn’t because we knew how expensive it would be. Overall, it would have saved us a lot of time and money to do that. I ended up barely doing anything about it (we have 6 kids as we are a blended family and with custody schedules with both our exes, and everything involved with 6 kids, our life is INSANE) and just wanted to muscle through it like I always did everything else in my life. It took almost a year of being bedridden 80-90% of the time, but I finally got an MRI and had not one, not two, not three, but FOUR herniated discs. We tried for months to do every treatment option besides surgery. Finally, after a year and a half of being bedridden, I got the surgery on the worst herniated disc (apparently getting surgery on herniated discs doesn’t actually stop back pain, so they operated on the one that made me walk with a literal zombie walk and caused so much pain over the others). It cost almost 4K out of pocket, and then 3 weeks after the surgery, I herniated the exact same disc AGAIN. This herniation was twice as big as the one before, and was going to get serious very quickly. I was in surgery again, 3 days after we found out it re herniated. Had to pay the same amount again, even though it was a month later, because I hit my out of pocket maximum for insurance with the first surgery, but at the end of the year, in December. So in January, I had to hit the out of pocket maximum AGAIN. ‘Cause you know, who with 6 kids that paid like 2k for treatments leading up to the surgery, can’t then afford two 4k surgeries only a month apart? 🤦🏼‍♀️ Anyway, I’m sure based on how you acted afterwards, it might not be serious, but it’s worth getting checked out. Once you start having disc issues, your life will likely be changed forever, and not in a good way. I used to be able to do anything physical I wanted, and prided myself on how tough I was. Now I’m being told I’ll likely never be able to pick up any of my children again. Who even knows about any of the other things I used to be able to do, like bend over to pick something up, lay on my bed without having to get in it a very slow and specific way that sucks, run, jump, lift anything over 4 pounds, and the list goes on. I was only 28 when this happened, and even now, I’m only 30, and my life will never be the same again. I’ve been through the ringer, physically too, in my lifetime. Everything else healed just fine. But back issues, especially discs, are so different. They get very little blood flow and it’s hard to do anything about that. This tiny little thing in your back can seriously affect the way you move every single part of your body, it’s mind blowing how much it can set you back.

  • Do not mud and tape. A good taper fixes the mess that a bad drywaller does. It's hard, and done properly it is tedious. Done properly the taper will take about three days to finish a room, with multiple applications etc. It is a hard job, that you should hire out. IMO.

Get the right compound and take it easy with it, unless you want to be sanding forever I found your page today 2/5/21 somehow through Trent and Allie, I'm thinking he is joking on saying he is gonna let someone else mud and tape.... hahahaha If not he is gonna get some hate hahahaha when that time comes..

  • 20:19 - HA HA HA, that was hilarious! Hard to say if you should mud and tape. I've done lots of it and still learn and still mess it up. Because it's your living space, if you do it yourself everything(literally) will covered in drywall dust for a while because you'll have to do more coats and more sanding than a pro.
