Here it is friends: the new adventure we've been dreaming and saving for since we first met 8 years ago. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! Sharing our first days of life up at our cabin in the woods 🌲
Looking forward to all of the home renovations and cabin improvements we'll be tackling this winter!

How Did We Get Here?
Abandoning our Van in Africa bit.ly/2Kff0HT
After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! But after nearly 6 months, we realized that our dreams of continuing van life across North America in our new van build were not a current reality with the state of the world. So, we've found ourselves pursuing something we've dreamed of since we first got together 8 years ago... a cabin in the woods 😊
Tour the renovations we've done to our self converted sprinter van:

Our goal here is to inspire you to chase after your own dreams however big (or small... tiny homes anyone?) they may be! We hope to create a community of like-minded, positive individuals who will grow to love and support one another on their own journeys.

  • Is this really how you build stuff in Canada/US (20:57)?? By just dropping a cement block on the ground that can be easily lifted by a single man and sticking a log on it?? What if a strong wind blows?? Everything will be blown up in the air!! Here in Europe we would dig a 1meter hole on the ground, we would poor cement in it and create a strong base at the bottom of the hole, then put the log inside the hole and then fill in the hole with more cement until the cement reaches level of the ground. Do that for all the pillars and then support the whole roof on those log pillars, providing a really strong foundation for the whole structure.

  • I haven't read all the comments, so maybe this has been mentioned. I'm worried about uplift on the lean to. I'm not an engineer, but I've seen such structures fail from high winds. It looks like its pretty protected there, but I guess I'm the overbuild, paranoid type. After you finish all your other projects, you might add a cable and a helical anchor to each end of the beam. Love your vlog!

Maybe I missed something but since you’ve been living in a van for three years, how/when did you accumulate what appears to be every conceivable tools needed for these projects. I just bought a house and am doing renovations but major issues / workarounds because I have such a limited toolkit so far.

  • WOOD: I lived in Temiskiming region for over a year, house in the woods. You're going to need at least EIGHT cords of wood, and I suggest finding someone who has some DRY ASH...ash burns slowest, so you'll go through less. Or, have someone, next spring, identify a few ash trees on your property (if you're lucky), and spend a few weekends cutting them down, and stacking them to age for next winter. Good luck! Been binging your vids.

  • Backing a trailer: my dad always told me, "turn the bottom of the wheel the way you want the trailer to go". That's been helpful because I don't have to think about "turning anything opposite", if that makes sense. Hope that helps you teach your friend.

  • Great job toughing it out, even when some things do go wrong. On that note - *please* wear appropriate protection when using a chainsaw. In my village we had two instances of people cutting into their legs with a chainsaw last year and operating on chainsaw wounds is a bitch. There are trousers available that will block the saw when they're cut and thus protect your legs. Just a tip for the future - we like our Eamons and Becs in one piece (respectively). xx

  • Simpli safe was hacked into by professional hackers, there's a vid about it. The people also were able to turn the heat on or off and order things on it if it was connected through your phone on an app. They use unencrypted network communication, which allows hackers access to you and your home.
